All children want to be in schools with academic excellence. They deserve this. Yet, too many children are below or far below grade level. Why is this?
Our teachers and administators work really hard to see incremental changes. Why do they have to work so hard to get so little in achievement? Why is it taking so many years to achieve grade level or advanced for all children?
~BEHAVIOR MY DEAR WATSON, BEHAVIOR~
While a middle school teacher, I had a difficult time teaching because of constant interruptions, distractions, nonsense and inappropriate behaviors. I couldn't teach and they couldn't learn. Everything I did was painstaking. Yes, I had some successes, but they were short lived. Having had to learn the hard way myself, I thought, "What if I taught these children the skills they needed to show up differently? What if they weren't just trying to get under my skin and they really were never taught critical skills like focus and consideration? Could I save them the anguish and problems I had created for myself, when I didn't have those skills? Many children today don't realize they lack the critical skills to show up and be their best academically and socially. They disappoint their parents, frustrate their teachers and cause problems for themselves and others. Many truly can't understand how to change this and end up entering into a spiral of challenges and failures. Once children learn core skills they are able to develop anchor behaviors to draw from and positively proceed and excel in school and life. So I developed a set of procedures, a master list, embedded with universal values like treating people how you want to be treated, apologizing when you're were wrong, listening and being present, taking initiative, professionalism. These procedures were taught in a framework that allowed daily practice and peer support. Then I gave them ownership of their environment. Bringing out the best in everyone! The results were magical! Teachers, Principals and Parents work hard enough! Cultivating student behavior so they can learn and teachers can teach is essential. "Children crave success, they just have to be taught the behaviors that lead to it." Peters Procedures is a research validated classroom system that transforms behaviors by teaching core social and academic foundational skills through common language classroom Procedures thus shifting entire school climates into new cultures of academic achievement, personal responsibility and good ol' fashioned manners.
